Duke swaggered in here with such a noble presence and calm strength and toughness that I wanted to name him "John" or "Wayne" but then a friend suggested "The Duke" and it fits him SO perfectly! "The Duke" is a 7+ year old neutered male Alaskan Malamute mix with poor eyesight but personality plus. He was rescued from a kill shelter in central OH and is now living at CanineWorks Rescue and Sanctuary. He is extremely loving and patient as well as very low energy for a large dog. He does have moderate prey drive and dominance with other dogs so would do best in an experienced home. He has completed treatment for HW and is now in excellent health. He is an adorable gentle giant who loves any attention he can get and always says "thank you" for his meals by nuzzling my face. Duke weighs just over 100 lbs and may be mixed with Great Pyrenees. Update 8/15/12 Duke was successfully treated for HW and won rave review about his behavior at the vet's office. He is SO sweet and such a lovely boy. He really has no bad habits now and can even get along with other dogs with supervision. Please consider him if you have an "extra large" space in your home or heart. He does love interaction with other dogs and people so needs to have some of that but his exercise/socialization needs are quite moderate for such a large dog. August 2012 update and CDC (CanineWorks Dog Characteristics) scale (1-7): DUKE: 8 yr old Alaskan Malamute mix, dominant but fair with other dogs; a gentle giant and extremely well mannered with people. Very loving and a great companion for just about anyone. Will tolerate other dogs once introduced. An "Honest" dog. Prey drive: 4 People aggression: 1 Dog aggression: 5 Escape risk: 2 Health needs: 4 Activity level: 3 Grooming needs: 4 Trainability: 3 Favorite things: spending time with his people on walks or hanging out at home either inside or outside, wherever his people are, looking cute, eating.
